UPM is proud to announce that its flagship PoA, the “Sichuan Poor Rural-Household Biogas Development Programme”, has now saved a total of one million tons of GHG emissions from being released into the earth’s atmosphere since the beginning of its reduction period on 10th of May 2012.

Started in 2015, the programme aims at offsetting the climate impact of federal government’s employees’ business trips (road travel and flights) for the legislature 2014-2017. For 2017, the total amount of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions generated has risen to a total of 298,040 tCO2e, including for the first time all federal agencies part of the sustainability programme of the government.

Just recently, UPM and its Chinese cooperation partner Chengdu Oasis have decided to continue scaling up this PoA by including a new batch of 14 Component Project Activities (CPAs). With an average of 4,600 households per CPA, this means that by March 2015 an additional 64,400 poor Sichuan farmer families will not only benefit from a free and convenient biogas supply and highly efficient cook stoves, but also from carbon credit sales revenues and technical support offered by the project.

Together with this milestone, UPM is releasing today a new video showcasing the positive impact and sustainable co-benefits of the PoA for the households involved in the programme. The video is visible here.

The reduction of one million tons of carbon emissions in rural China is a remarkable achievement for climate protection. This accomplishment demonstrates also that our awarded household biogas PoA is capable of delivering large quantities of premium quality Gold Standard CERs to voluntary carbon offset clients each and every year in the most reliable way. - Martin Dilger, Managing Director of UPM
