UPM is pleased to announce that its award-winning GS CDM Sichuan Household Biogas PoA is now part of the BP Target Neutral portfolio of carbon offsetting projects.

The programme was put forward by Natural Capital Partners, specialists in the sale of offset projects to corporate clients around the world and the company responsible for the transaction with BP Target Neutral.

BP Target Neutral develops carbon neutral products and services for BP’s customers and partners. The programme is not for profit and has been working to reduce carbon emissions for customers for over ten years.

The selection of UPM’s PoA has been overseen by an independent project selection forum using the UN’s sustainable development goals as a framework for assessment. The high-quality carbon credits of the PoA will be used by BP to help develop carbon neutral products such as a PTAirTM,a carbon neutral PTA (purified terephthalic acid), which will help manufacturers of plastic packaging and fibres make lower carbon products for consumers.

We are delighted that our PoA has been selected after a strict and thorough evaluation to join the BP Target Neutral’s portfolio of carbon offsetting projects and that its top-tier Gold Standard CERs will support this ambitious voluntary carbon neutrality programme. - Martin Dilger, Managing Director of UPM

UPM’s Sichuan Household Biogas PoA is recognized among private and public institutions as a top-tier carbon offset project not only for its important contribution to climate change mitigation but also for its significant sustainable development contributions. In 2016, a study from the University of Science and Technology of Beijing acknowledged the project’s impacts on 14 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Most significant SDGs covered are No. 3 – Good-Health and Well Being, No. 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, No. 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy, No, 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, and No. 13 – Climate Action.

The PoA was officially presented to BP Target Neutral customers and partners in Asia during the launch event of BP’s PTAirTMproduct offer in Shanghai in September 2017.
