News Release

UPM has recently become a recognized carbon offset partner of the Alliance for Development and Climate. As part of this partnership, UPM offers Alliance members carbon credits from high quality carbon offset projects in developing and newly industrializing countries. These UPM projects have been certified under the CDM and the Gold Standard and have been verified to improve the living conditions of local people in addition to saving greenhouse gases.

All supporters of the Alliance for Development and Climate can offset their remaining GHG emissions after avoidance and reduction measures either by purchasing and/or cancelling carbon credits from UPM’s existing projects or by developing their own new carbon offset projects with a large sustainability contribution in the global South together with UPM.

In view of the intensifying threats posed by climate change, which will have a particularly serious impact in developing countries, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) initiated the Alliance for Development and Climate in autumn 2018. With the goal of promoting sustainable development and climate protection at the same time, this alliance recognizes, links and promotes increased non-governmental involvement, especially by the private sector, in the implementation of the Global Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement.

More than 300 supporters have already joined the alliance: large and small companies, SMEs, associations, public authorities, universities, project developers, carbon offset providers and civil society. They all want to contribute to climate protection by avoiding, reducing and offsetting CO2. Private individuals can also take part and improve their personal carbon balance. The number of participants is to be significantly increased by the end of 2019.

Alliance for Development and Climate
We consider the BMZ's Alliance for Development and Climate to be an extremely helpful and important initiative on the road to a sustainable and climate-friendly future and are delighted to be able to support this alliance as a compensation partner with our climate protection projects," says Martin Dilger, Managing Director of UPM.
