News Release

In 2014, UPM and sustainable AG are the leading carbon offset sponsors of International Emissions Trading Agency (IETA) carbon market conferences. Besides recent Carbon Expo, this comprehensive GHG compensation initiative also includes the Africa CARBON Forum2014 taking place from 2nd to 4th of July 2014 in Windhoek, Namibia, the Carbon Forum North America, scheduled for 23rd of September in New York City, USA, and the Carbon Forum Asia, which will be held from 24th to 25th of September in Bangkok, Thailand.

The next in line will be this year’s Africa Carbon Forum (ACF 2014). The ACF 2014 is the flagship forum for the future of carbon markets in Africa, a continent with many emerging economies and a large untapped potential for sustainable low carbon development. The main objectives of ACF 2014 are

  • to update participants on recent developments in the international carbon market, the efforts to increase demand for carbon credits generated by the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), as well as the role of results-based climate finance,
  • to examine the value and impact of the voluntary market for CDM projects registered in Africa and
  • to promote knowledge transfer and linkages between CDM programmes of activities (PoAs), Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), the New Market Mechanism (NMM) and the Framework for Various Approaches (FVA).

As with the carbon offset sponsorship for the Carbon Expo, sustainable will again be responsible for calculating the event’s GHG emissions while UPM will provide and retire the required amount of Gold Standard VERs from ClimateCare’s award winning Ugastoves efficient cook stoves project in Uganda to compensate for the carbon footprint of ACF 2014.

UPM and sustainable AG have started this joint comprehensive carbon offsetting initiative for IETA’s 2014 carbon market conferences because these premium events are the ideal platforms to increase the visibility of our two companies outside of Europe and promote further internationalization of our businesses in terms of both procurement and sales of first class carbon offsets. - Martin Dilger, Managing Director of UPM, and sustainable’s co-founder and board member, Jan-Marten Krebs.
