Today, UPM’s Sichuan Rural Poor-Household Biogas Development Programme in China (CDM PoA 2898, GS 1239) successfully obtained its twelfth issuance of Gold Standard VERs covering vintage 2023. After deduction of applicable share of proceeds to support Gold Standard operations, 408,000 premium-quality GS VERs are available for sale to help clients around the globe achieve their climate action and CSR objectives. With twelve issuances obtained since its start summing up to a volume of slightly more than 7.6 million GS CERs and GS VERs, this PoA ranks among the largest and most reliable suppliers of Gold Standard carbon credits for the voluntary carbon market.
This PoA’s host country China has not yet published any guidance on how it avoids double counting in compliance with Art. 6 of the Paris Agreement and has not yet issued any host country corresponding adjustment approvals. To avoid any potential double counting risks, carbon credit end-users located outside of China should therefore rather use this PoA’s vintage 2023 GS VERs to support climate action and sustainable development in China (contribution or impact claim) than for offsetting their own GHG emissions (compensation claim).
Looking ahead, this PoA will have its 13th and last issuance in approximately one year with a combined issuance for its vintages 2024 and 2025. Thereafter, it will have reached the end of its crediting period and no more new carbon credits will be issued by this groundbreaking and most impactful GHG emissions avoidance programme.
Meanwhile, UPM explores new project opportunities for household biogas, clean water and other community-based project types to continue protecting the climate, promoting sustainable development and supporting the most needy and vulnerable people on the planet.
