The United Nations Development Programme, in support of the Ministry of Energy and Water, has initiated the implementation of the CEDRO 5 project, co-funded by the European Union. The CEDRO 5 project is implemented in partnership with the Association of Lebanese Industrialists (ALI), The Lebanon Green Building Council (LGBC), and the International Renewable Energy Credits (I-REC) Institution. The European Commission (EC) is encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in Lebanon to support a clean energy transition. The overall aim of the EC is to address job creation and growth in support of Lebanon’s economy, in line with the first priority sector of the Single Support Framework for EU Support to Lebanon (2017-2020), while supporting Climate Change Mitigation in Lebanon.
The CEDRO 5 project aims to achieve the above objectives through enhancing innovation, entrepreneurship and research, assisting in technology transfer and the creation of new value chains in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sector, supporting and initiating enabling policy, training and capacity building, and targeting effective awareness initiatives on renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE).
The project is to provide services for the design, development and delivery of a “Train the Trainers” program on renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions–LOT 3-Biogas systems, the production of electricity and heat from animal farms, slaughterhouses, and agro-food industries’ wastes. As part of a “Train the Trainers” workshop, qualified people in Lebanon shall be educated in different renewable energy solutions and prepared to forward the gained knowledge.
The UPM team was assigned to prepare and implement a 2 week-online training as well as 1 week in-person training on biogas systems, electricity and heat production from animal farms, slaughterhouses, and agro-food industry wastes. The aim was to teach 25 professionals on this topic in the Lebanese context and ensure their capability to conduct these learnings to others.
In specific, tasks performed were:
– Conduct of initial needs assessment with the 25 participants
– Preparation of structure and contents for online training considering background, knowledge level and objectives of the assignment (in the form of presentations and additional learning materials)
– Implementation of 2-week-online training: 2.5 hours per day
– Based on intermediate assessment of trainees after the online training, preparation of structure and contents for in-person training
– Implementation of 1 week training in Beirut, Lebanon including site visit, discussion of real-world case studies provided by participants, etc.
