UPM works all around the globe on sustainable climate solutions for institutional and private clients because mitigation of global warming and the transition to a low-carbon-economy will be the most important challenge to all of us in the coming decades.
Nowadays, the negative effects of global warming become ever more obvious. Although global warming might have natural as well as man-made causes, it is the prevailing view in international climate science that, especially since the start of industrialization, the massive increase of atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities such as combustion of fossil fuels, intensive livestock farming and widespread deforestation has accelerated global warming significantly.
The global rise of temperatures can be life-threatening to mankind if it exceeds certain critical levels and thresholds. As a consequence, fundamental elements and regulating mechanisms of the global ecosystems (oceans streams, weather systems, polar ice caps, permafrost soils etc.) might collapse or change that abruptly and irreversibly that it will be almost impossible or extremely expensive for all of us to adapt.
Currently, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assumes that the global average temperature must not rise by more than 2°C from today’s levels if the climate is to remain stable and excessive risks for humanity are to be avoided.
UPM is fully committed to achieving this climate protection target and helping to keep the earth’s temperature within safe limits.
