UPM is delighted to announce the successful registration of the Pakistani Jhimpir Power Wind Farm Project at the Global Carbon Council (GCC). The registration date is May 05, 2025. The project is only the third GCC registered project in Pakistan. As of May 12, 2025, a total of 140 projects are registered at GCC.

The Jhimpir Power Wind Farm Project is located in Jhimpir, near Nooriabad, District Thatta, Sindh, Pakistan. The project owner is Jhimpir Power (Private) Limited. The project comprises the installation of 29 wind turbines General Electric (GE) Turbines of 1.715 MW each. These provide a total installed capacity of 49.735MW (GE 1.715 MW*29 WTGs) with a predicted power supply to the grid of 168.682 MWh per annum, which replace power generation of those fossil fuel-fired power plants delivered to the national grid under the baseline scenario. The project has achieved full commercial operation since 16/03/2018. It is estimated that the project will generate 84,891 tCO2e emission reductions per year bringing the total potential GHG emission reductions to 848,910 tCO2e in the fixed 10-year crediting period.

“Today, we proudly inform about the successful registration of the Jhimpir Power Wind Farm Project with the Global Carbon Council. It is just the third registered GCC project in Pakistan and reaching this milestone is another major achievement for UPM. UPM has been developing climate change mitigation projects in the field of renewable energy in Pakistan since 2012, most of them under CDM and Gold Standard. When the GCC was founded in 2016, it was the first global standard for carbon credits from the Global South. UPM wanted to support this initiative from the outset and was able to successfully develop its first project under this standard with the Hawa Energy Wind Farm Project which was registered in December 2024. Like its predecessor, the Jhimpir Power Wind Farm project will help Pakistan achieve its climate and sustainable development goals while contributing to stabilizing Pakistan’s energy supply.” - Martin Dilger, Managing Director of UPM

About the Global Carbon Council (GCC)

The Global Carbon Council (GCC) is the first international carbon credit and sustainable development program, based in the Global South. It was established (as Global Carbon Trust) by the Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD) in 2016.

The GCC Program contributes to a more sustainable and low-carbon future, by registering high-quality projects from around the world that have demonstrated their additionality in the reduction or removal of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, while ensuring that project construction and operations do not cause any net-harm to the environment and society.
